Can a Couple Counselor Help Resolve Any Sort of Marriage Conflicts?

Every couple can benefit from professional counseling. However, there are many factors that can influence the potential success of therapy. Understanding these factors may help you determine whether you really need marriage counseling or not. As a couple counselor, I can say that not every case is suitable for counseling. There are certain situations when a couple may not receive the expected results from the therapy. Here are several examples.

Professional counselorOne or both partners are unwilling to complete their assignments necessary to reverse negative relational patterns. A marriage counselor cannot impose you or your spouse to do certain things or act in certain ways. He/she will simply point out the things that you and your spouse need to do in order to improve your relationship. If you are not willing to do it, then the therapy won’t help. Think of your counselor as someone who can point you in the right direction. Whether you decide to take that road or not is totally up to you.

The fear of physical abuse makes one of the partners clamp up during the session. If verbal or physical abuse is a problem, then the therapist will have a very hard time determining the real cause of the problem. This is mostly because one of the partners is too afraid to open up a subject even during counseling session. As long as there is no truthful communication during the sessions, the entire therapy is rendered inefficient.

Mental illness is having a serious impact on the relationship. Addiction and mental illness are conditions that must be treated prior to marriage counseling. Failing to do that may make it very hard for the couple counselor to work on the marital issues.

One or both partners have already decided to end the marriage. Going to couples therapy implies that both partners have a goal that they want to reach. If both of them have decided to end up the marriage, then therapy won’t help.
